    1212= Terminology Management Systems
    13 A Product Information Management System (PIM) is a database specialized on managing hierarchical product and component data like product families, groups and individual products and articles representing product variants. Nodes on every level can be assigned various information like technical data fields, product images but also commercial information like prices or number of articles in stock, drawn from external systems like ERP.
     13A Terminology Management System (TMS) is a database providing a data model for the organization of multilingual terminology that must (or must not) be used in any written communication in its scope. TMS help organizing terminology on a level that defines a concept (including pictures, written definitions and references to other sources). The concept level contains references to mandatory and forbidden designations in the various languages. Both concepts and designations can have further attributes (for example, properties like gender or other types of grammatical classification). Modifications are tracked.
    1414
    15 Data in a PIM can be used in various ways:
    16 * Source of product validity master data used in a [wiki:Public/StartPageCinnamon CMS]
    17 * Supply of product data to be inserted into manuals managed in a [wiki:Public/StartPageCinnamon CMS]
    18 * Publication of data sheets (typically using internal publication engines for simple layouts)
    19 * Publication of catalogs and other marketing information (often using Adobe® !InDesign as a publication engine, allowing more complex and flexible layout)
    20 * Serving a shop system as a back-end
     15Due to the high relevance of TMS for both technical writers using an tools like XML or other editors and a CCMS, and translators using a TM, it is common that there are integrations of TMS with XML editors and Translation Memory solutions available. Many Translation Memory software vendors, particularly the well-known market leaders, also have TMS products that integrate with their own and possibly other tools.

    22 = Open Source Solutions
    23 There are many commercial PIM solutions on the market, many of them for specialized purposes. Only the smaller part are fit for managing complex, hierarchical technical product data, many are rather focused on selling clothing and other items of low complexity in a shop. There are also a few Open Source systems, among them [https://pimcore.com/ pimcore], is a powerful system with a broad choice of extensions and a large market share.
     17To enable data exchange between TMS from different vendors, there is an XML based standard exchange format, TBX (**T**erm **Base** e**X**change). Most TMS solutions can read and write TBX.

    25 = Commercial Solutions
    26 Even though there are good arguments in favour of Open Source solutions, this does not mean that Open Source solutions are always the best choice. The selection of a PIM solution is a strategic decision for the following decade (at least), and should be made carefully, based on the current and future requirements. All systems on the market have different strengths and weaknesses, and therefore, there is no //one size fits all// solution. In some cases, an Open Source system is the best choice, in others, a commercial system fits the functional and budgetary needs best.
     19= pureTBX
     20Our own product [wiki:Public/Products/pureTBX pureTBX] is strictly based on TBX.

    28 We offer to provide our expertise in [wiki:Public/StartPageProductSelection product selection consultancy] to find the optimal system for you. From the entire market of commercial and open systems, we choose the optimal solution for your applications.
     22Like any other TMS, it allows you to manage different terminologies and edit concepts and terms. There are different views and filters to efficiently find the data you are looking for. Since pureTBX works on the TBX standard as its native data model, you can export or import data from other vendors' systems anytime.
     23
     24[wiki:Public/Products/pureTBX pureTBX] is a lightweight solution by design, and therefore, we not only offer a client-server-version based on an XML database, but also a stand-alone, single-user version that works on local files.
     25
     26Apart from standard TMS functionality, [wiki:Public/Products/pureTBX pureTBX] allows you to easily find and repair duplicates, contradictions and infrictions of rules that you define by Regular Expressions.
